In Memory

Nancy Butler (Russell)

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Nancy
B. Russell. Nancy passed away peacefully at Davis Hospice Center on November 19,
2025, surrounded by her loving husband, Pat and some of her dear friends after
courageously battling a short but aggressive cancer diagnosis.
Nancy was born September 28, 1954, in Denver. Her family moved to Cheyenne when
she was 7 years old. She was very proud to have been adopted in infancy by Robert
and Marcelle Butler, former Cheyenne residents.
Nancy served as Wyoming's very first Unclaimed Property Director located in the
Wyoming State Treasurer's Office. Prior to her retirement from state service in 2015,
Nancy served as an active member of the National Association of Unclaimed Property
Administrators (NAUPA) for 27 years.
She proudly served on the NAUPA Executive Committee as the Board Secretary for five
years; two terms on the NAUPA Executive Committee as Western Region Vice
President and was chair or a member of various other national committees. She was
the recipient of numerous national and state awards. At the 1999 Annual Conference,
Nancy was honored with the NAUPA Presidential Distinguished Service Award. Nancy
was passionate about her work and a champion for consumer protection on behalf of
Wyoming residents. Nancy retired from the State of Wyoming in 2015 with more than 40
years of service.
Nancy was a member of the Cheyenne Chapter of Civic League for 30 years and
served as hostess co-chair for 12 years.
Nancy's greatest joys in life were spending time with her beloved husband, Pat, their
dogs (Dooney & Boo) and working in her flower gardens.
Nancy was a friend to all and her enthusiasm for life was infectious! Nancy found joy in
remembering birthdays and significant dates, making everyone around her feel special
and loved. She loved her precious pets; cooking for others; decorating for Christmas;
and the sparkle in her eyes and joy in her heart was greatly fulfilled when serving
others. A connection with Nancy always left you with a smile. We have truly lost a great
soul and Heaven has gained a beautiful angel.
Nancy will be greatly missed by her loving husband of over 31 years, Patrick Russell of
Cheyenne; as well as her countless friends near & far! She is also survived by a son,
Travis Sutton (Mariah), grandson, Quaid Sutton, and granddaughters, Alexandria &
Fiona, all of Sheridan, Wyoming, and sister Lynda Winters of Lafayette, Colorado.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Marcelle Butler.
A memorial service will be held at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes on
Saturday, December 13, 2025 at 2:00 PM MT. (The service will also be live-streamed)

Nancy was so lovingly cared for by the exceptional staff at Davis Hospice Center. Her
family will be forever grateful for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, Nancy asked that donations be made to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter
or Davis Hospice Center.
There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone,
the light remains. Nancy, your light will forever shine in our lives & hearts!
